About Us
Howard Theatre Restoration, Inc. (HTR), a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, leads a collaborative effort with the District of Columbia and other private entities to bring the life, the music, and the people back to The Howard Theatre.
HTR oversees the reconstruction and cultural development of the Howard Theatre, a National Landmark that is also one of the 500 Treasures in the Save America's Treasures Program. The reconstruction effort is being managed by the Ellis Development Group. Architects Martinez & Johnson, recognized leaders in the application of architectural preservation standards and procedures, and interior architect Marshall Moya are leading the design effort. Construction services are provided by Whiting & Turner.
The mission of Howard Theatre Restoration, Inc. is to restore the theater, preserve the building, preserve the history, and educate the community about the Howard Theatre in Washington, DC. HTR has so far raised all of the funds necessary to restore the theatre, and will now concentrate its fundraising efforts on Phase 2, the construction of the Howard Theatre Culture and Education Center, which will house a museum, classrooms, listening library, recording studio, and offices for HTR.
HTR aims to educate the community at large about the importance of this National Landmark in American culture and history and to inspire the next generation of great artists to perform on the stage of the Howard Theatre.
