About Us

Howard Theatre Restoration, Inc. (HTR), is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, that led the collaborative effort with the District of Columbia and other private entities to bring the life, the music, and the people back to The Howard Theatre.

HTR oversaw the reconstruction and cultural development of the Howard Theatre, a National Landmark that is also one of the 500 Treasures in the Save America's Treasures Program. The reconstruction effort was managed by the Ellis Development Group. Architects Martinez & Johnson, recognized leaders in the application of architectural preservation standards and procedures, and interior architect Marshall Moya led the design effort. Construction services were provided by Whiting & Turner.

The mission of Howard Theatre Restoration, Inc. is to preserve the history of the Howard Theatre and to inspire the next generation of artists that perform on the stage of this national landmark.

The goal is to raise funds to build and endow the Education and Cultural Center annexed to the theatre. This Center will include a museum, state of the art recording studio, listening library, a donor lounge and the offices for HTR. Ultimately, it will serve as a central point to educate the community about the historical contribution that the Howard Theatre has made to the music world.
