As a member of "Reese Palmer and the Marquees", I first played the Howard Theatre back in 1979 on an "oldies but goodies" revival show. Back in 1950s, the original group which became "Harvey Fuqua and the New Moonglows" originated from Washington, DC. Members from these two groups included Reese Palmer, who also performed for many years with the Legendary Orioles; Chester Simmons, who was an original member of the Rainbows; Marvin Gaye, who became a huge solo artist at Motown; and Chuck Barksdale, who joined and is still a member of the Dells, and Harvey Fuqua who was the original member of Moonglows. When Reese and I reconstituted the Marquees in the 1970s, there were a few other noteworthy members, Ronald "Poosie" Miles of the "Rainbows" and Warren "Scooter" Magruder, a well-known DC DJ and GM of Roadhouse Oldies. I have very fond memories of the Howard Theatre as a customer and an entertainer. I'm glad to see the Theatre is being revitalized. I remember being a part of the U Street revitalization back in the early 1990s. I look forward to the comeback of the Howard. --Thanks, Linda Sizer Watts

One of the greatest, and earliest, also DC-born, was the great Florence Mills, Duke Ellington's "Black Beauty" (otherwise known as "Portrait of Florence Mills")

I personally have no experience of the Howard Theater. However, my husband was a performer and I have heard him mention working at the Howard. He was a variety act (unicycle-juggling on a table). He has passed away, so I have no real facts - probably he would have appeared there in the 1950's. He was not black, but white. I don't know that I have any photos of him at the Howard. I do have some of his publicity photos taken during that era, and one of him while he performed at the Apollo, with Cab Calloway, Erskine Hawkins, Moms Mably, and Rosa la Rosa. Would be interested to hear from anyone who might remember anything of his appearance/s at the Howard.

While going through some old clippings I made note of Howard bookings of well-known Black acts from the early days. Here is a random incomplete selection:
March 1911 Black Patti Troubadors Black Patti was Sissieretta Jones, a famous soprano whose varierty show toured widely. Many early Black performers learnt their trade with Black Patti.
July 1911 Southern Smart Set Company another long established Black vaudeville troupe, led by Salem Tutt Whitney and J Homer Tutt. Active 1890s to 1930s
May 1913 Frank Montgomery & Florence McClain a husband and wife team, he was producer and director for the Howard in 1910, and later for the Lafayette (Harlem) from 1916
December 1913 Sherman H Dudley & Co. Dudley was the owner of the Dudley Circuit of Black theatres (foreunner of the TOBA) of which the Howard became a member. He was active from the 1880s and unlike the later TOBA was well respected by performers on his circuit.
May 1915 Mills and Caldwell Florence Mills and Kinky Caldwell (later Clark). Florence went on to become the first Black female international superstar in Europe. Sadly Kinky died in the early 1920s
May 1915 Jim Burris co-composer of the song "Ballin' the Jack"
June 1915 Bradford and Jeanette Perry 'Mule' Bradford, prolific songwriter & performer, with his then wife, who later split with him and became part of Seymour & Jeanette
May 1922 Billy King & Co One of the best known Black comedians of the era, born 1875, a veteran of the minstrel days
December 1922 Perry Bradford & Mamie Smith. Bradford is credited with staring the blues craze. when he got Mamie Smith to record his "Crazy Blues" in 1920 (the first solo recording by a Black female singer). Supporting group included Mamie Smith's Jazz Hounds, with Johnny Dunn, and Florence Mills' sister Maud.

That's all for now!

Hello, thank you for your reply. If you know of anyone who has a picture of my father would you please let me know? My family has only 1 photo of my father before he died and we have no video or photos of my father's performance. Again, thank you so much.
